Prevalence and Incidence of Syphilis

Syphilis: Rare Disease

Syphilis is listed as a "rare disease" by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This means that Syphilis, or a subtype of Syphilis, affects less than 200,000 people in the US population.

Incidence (annual) of Syphilis:

70,000 cases (NIAID; CDC 2001) ... see also overview of Syphilis.

Incidence Rate:

approx 1 in 3,885 or 0.03% or 70,000 people in USA [Source statistic for calcuation: "70,000 cases (NIAID; CDC 2001)" -- see also general information about data sources]

Incidence extrapolations for USA for Syphilis:

70,000 per year, 5,833 per month, 1,346 per week, 191 per day, 7 per hour, 0 per minute, 0 per second. [Source statistic for calculation: "70,000 cases (NIAID; CDC 2001)" -- see also general information about data sources]

Incidence of types of Syphilis:

For details see incidence of types of Syphilis analysis; summary of available incidence by type data:

Incidence of Syphilis:

An estimated 70,000 sexually transmitted infections with Treponema pallidum, the cause of syphilis, occur each year in the United States. (Source: excerpt from Sexually Transmitted Diseases Statistics, NIAID Fact Sheet: NIAID) ... In 1997, 8,550 cases of primary and secondary syphilis in the United States were reported to the CDC, a case rate of 3.2/100,000. (Source: excerpt from Sexually Transmitted Diseases Statistics, NIAID Fact Sheet: NIAID) ... The incidence of syphilis has increased and decreased dramatically in recent years, with more than 11,000 cases reported in 1996. (Source: excerpt from Sexually Transmitted Diseases, NIAID Fact Sheet: NIAID)

Worldwide incidence of Syphilis:

12 million worldwide cases

Incidence statistics for Syphilis:

The following statistics relate to the incidence of Syphilis:

  • 70,000 new cases annually in America (Tracking The Hidden Epidemics, CDC, 2002)
  • 37,977 cases annually in the USA (1998)
  • 31,575 new cases of syphilis occurred annually in the US 2000 (Health, United States: 2002, NCHS, CDC)
  • 35,628 annual cases including 6,657 primary/secondary cases notified in USA 1999 (MMWR 1999)

Death statistics for Syphilis:

    Syphilis: Causes and incidence
(Professional Guide to Diseases (Eighth Edition))

Infection from the spirochete Treponema pallidum causes syphilis. Transmission occurs primarily through sexual contact during the primary, secondary, and early latent stages of infection. Prenatal transmission from an infected mother to her fetus is also possible. (See Prenatal syphilis.)

Incidence is highest in people ages 20 to 29.

    Syphilis: Syphilis - epidemiology
    (The 5-Minute Pediatric Consult)

    • Congenital syphilis is transmitted from an infected mother to her unborn or newborn baby.
    • Acquired syphilis is sexually transmitted from an infected to an uninfected individual.
    • Infection transmitted to the fetus at any stage of disease; during primary and secondary syphilis, rate of transmission is 60–100%
    • Nasal secretions are highly infectious in congenital syphilis, and open, moist skin lesions are infectious in congenital and acquired syphilis.

    About prevalence and incidence statistics:

The term 'prevalence' of Syphilis usually refers to the estimated population of people who are managing Syphilis at any given time. The term 'incidence' of Syphilis refers to the annual diagnosis rate, or the number of new cases of Syphilis diagnosed each year. Hence, these two statistics types can differ: a short-lived disease like flu can have high annual incidence but low prevalence, but a life-long disease like diabetes has a low annual incidence but high prevalence. For more information see about prevalence and incidence statistics.
