The prognosis for a good medical outcome: There is a reasonable outcome for this operation. However there is a very low probability that the patient will return to pre injury function.
Pre-surgical preparations for Hemiarthroplasty may include: Perform a complete history, document the preoperative neurovascular status of the limb, especially the axillary nerve. Obtain xrays. Templates of the prosthesis to be implanted, possible CT scan.
Recovery period for Hemiarthroplasty: Passive motion is usually begun on the first postoperative day under supervision. The range of motion is limited by the stability of the intra-operative tuberosity fixation. After 4 weeks the patient generally begins active assisted range of motion exercises to improve the shoulders range of motion. After radiographic evidence of union then active range of motion can be added. Usually be 10-12 weeks the patient is able to begin resistance type exercises and a more aggressive stretching program.
