Vitrectomy: A vitrectomy is the removal of the gel-like substance from the inside of the eye (the vitreous cavity or body) to treat bleeding in the vitreous cavity or a detached retina. An expandable gas or other gel-like substance is injected to push the retina back against the eye wall. Scar tissue around the torn retina can be created with cold (cryotherapy) or heat (laser photocoagulation).
