Diagnostic tests for Alkalosis:

Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Alkalosis. Some of these are listed below :

  • Physical examination - increased respiratory rate (hyperventilation) as cause of alkalosis, looking for signs of possible causes of alkalosis e.g. Cushing's syndrome, vomiting, stroke , meningitis.
  • If vomiting , examine for causes of vomiting - e.g. abdominal distension with intestinal obstruction.
  • Arterial blood gas analysis - to analyse the acid-base balance (e.g. respiratory alkalosis has an elevated pH and reduced pCO2).
  • Blood test
    • Electrolytes - low potassium if vomiting, Cushing's syndrome, Conn's syndrome or from some diuretics.

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Alkalosis. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • Has there been recent poisoning with salicylates or alkalis?
  • Do you take diuretic medications?
  • Do you regularly take antacids for indigestion?
  • Have you suffered any vomiting recently? - Vomiting can potentially cause a Metabolic Alkalosis.
  • Have you had any burn injuries? - Although these can cause shock and metabolic acidosis, they can also cause metabolic alkalosis by depleting your bodies stores of potassium (hypokalemia).

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Alkalosis) may include:

  • Have you been vomiting?
  • Do you have any Cushing-like symptoms?
  • Do you ever knowingly hyperventilate due to anxiety or panic?
  • Have you had stroke symptoms?
