Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Blue lips. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • How long have you noticed that you have blue lips?
  • Is it intermittent or constant? - e.g. the lips in cold weather are often blue.
  • Is blueness limited to lips and peripheries?(e.g. blue lips and hands but not blue tongue) - this indicates a lack of blood supply to those parts of the body and may indicate exposure to cold, peripheral vascular disease, left ventricular failure or shock.
  • If also blue tongue, is there a history of drug ingestion? - e.g. potassium chlorate, sulfanilamide and coal tar may cause hemoglobin abnormalities and thus central cyanosis.
  • What is the age of the patient? - certain causes of cyanosis are limited to children such as acute epiglottitis, croup and acute subglottic laryngitis.
  • more questions...»

  • Significant shortness of breath - should consider a lung or heart origin for the blue hands e.g. cyanotic congenital heart disease, pulmonary embolism, pulmonary fibrosis or pulmonary emphysema.
