Symptom: Blurred vision
Introduction: Blurred vision
Any type of vision loss (e.g. blindness, blurred vision, double vision, etc.)
is a symptom of great concern.
Many of the causes are very serious medical conditions.
Certain types of vision changes can be a medical emergency
where delay can lead to loss of sight (e.g. for causes such as glaucoma, eye injury, retinal detachment)
or loss of life (e.g. for causes such as stroke, TIA, etc.).
Even transient or temporary blindness or loss of vision cannot be ignored
because it can
result from serious conditions such as stroke, TIA, hypertension, epilepsy, or
migraine.
Seek immediate professional medical attention for any such symptoms of vision changes.

Diagnostic tests for Blurred vision:
Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Blurred vision. Some of these are listed below :
- Physical examination
- Blood pressure - high blood pressure increases risk of carotid artery insufficiency, hypertensive retinopathy, papilledema and stroke.
- Visual acuity - in both eyes and with and without glasses (if worn) to determine any refractive error.
- Visual field testing - to detect either a contraction (a local or general reduction in the area of field) or a scotoma (an island of loss within the field). Use Confrontation testing, Perimetry testing and Central field testing. Mapping the visual field defect can help determine cause. E.g. glaucoma, pituitary tumor, toxic causes such as methyl alcohol.
- Examination of pupils and the pupil reflexes

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)
During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Blurred vision.
Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing
your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information
you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis.
Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:
- How long have you noticed the blurred vision? - to determine if acute or chronic.
- Is it unilateral or bilateral? - if unilateral would suggest local eye causes such as cataract, refractive error, iritis, glaucoma, keratitis, retinal detachment, foreign body, vitreous hemorrhage, optic neuritis, orbital fracture. If bilateral may suggest cocaine use, methyl alcohol poisoning, tobacco, barbiturates, quinine and other drugs. Bilateral blurred vision can also with cataracts, glaucoma, chorioretinitis, retinitis pigmentosa, optic atrophy, papilledema, papillitis, optic neuritis, refractive error, pituitary tumors, posterior cerebral artery occlusion, concussion, migraine and hysteria.
- Is it transient or constant? - if transient may suggest migraine, carotid artery insufficiency or diabetic swelling of the lens.
- Was it sudden in onset? - may suggest migraine, optic neuritis, vitreous hemorrhage, iritis, keratitis, glaucoma, retinal detachment, foreign body, retrobulbar neuritis, orbital fracture, carotid artery insufficiency and hysteria.
- Drug or alcohol ingestion? - e.g. cocaine, tobacco, barbiturates, methyl alcohol, quinine and other drugs may be responsible.

Diagnosis Checklist: Associated symptoms your doctor may ask about (and why!)
Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse
your condition.
The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Blurred vision) may include:
- Floaters - indicates retinal hemorrhage or choroiditis, posterior vitreous detachment.
- Flashing lights - suggests retinal detachment, posterior vitreous detachment.
- Colored haloes around lights - suggests glaucoma, cataracts.
- Zigzag lines - suggests migraine.
- Vision worse at night or in dim light - suggests retinitis pigmentosa, syphilitic retinitis.
