Bulimia nervosa, often simply called bulimia, is an eating disorder. People with bulimia consume large amounts of food and then rid their bodies of the excess calories by purging (self-induce vomiting, misuse of laxatives or diuretics) or by non-purging (excessive exercise, fasting) behaviors. Some bulimics use a combination of purging and non-purging behaviors. The cycle of overeating and purging can quickly become an addictive behavior. Individuals suffering from Bulimia Nervosa follow a routine of secretive, uncontrolled or binge eating (ingesting an abnormally large amount of food within a set period of time) followed by behaviors to rid the body of food consumed. This includes self - induced vomiting and/or the misuse of laxatives, diet pills, diuretics (water pills), excessive exercise or fasting.
