Misdiagnosis and Clotting symptoms

Unnecessary hysterectomies due to undiagnosed bleeding disorder in women: The bleeding disorder called Von Willebrand's disease is quite common in women, but often fails to be correctly diagnosed. Women with the condition tend to have heavy periods, since they actually have a bleeding disorder. Severe afflictions may result in the women receiving a hysterectomy unnecessarily, when the underlying cause has not been identified. See the introduction to Von Willebrand's disease and bleeding disorder....read more »

Diagnostic tests for Clotting symptoms:

Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Clotting symptoms. Some of these are listed below :

  • Physical examination
    • Absent leg pulses may suggest acute arterial embolism
    • Swollen ankle, swollen tender warm calf may suggest deep vein thrombosis
    • Neurological examination to detect signs of stroke e.g. weak or paralyzed limbs, increased tone of the affected limbs, difficulty with speech and swallowing
    • Eye examination to look for signs of retinal artery or vein thrombosis

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Clotting symptoms. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • When did you start having problems with clotting? - to determine if acute or chronic.
  • Where have you had clots form? - e.g. deep veins of legs, pulmonary embolus, brain clots causing stroke, heart vessel clots causing heart attacks, leg artery clot causing arterial obstruction, retinal vein or artery thrombosis.
  • How many times have you had problems with clotting? - to determine if recurrent thrombosis.
  • Risk factors for arterial thrombosis? - atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) is the major risk factor for arterial thrombosis. Risk factors for atherosclerosis include elevated cholesterol, smoking, high blood pressure, increasing age, family history.
  • Risk factors for venous thrombosis? - e.g. obesity, varicose veins, immobility (bed rest for more than 4 days), pregnancy, major surgery, malignancy, cardiac failure, recent heart attack, infection, nephrotic syndrome, elevated platelets, sickle cell anemia and inherited disorders e.g. AT-III deficiency.
