During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Cravings. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • How long have you noticed the cravings? - to establish if acute or chronic.
  • What foods or substances do you crave? - e.g. salty foods may be suggestive of Addison's disease or premenstrual tension; sweet foods e.g. chocolate may be suggestive of premenstrual tension; carbohydrate food craving may be suggestive of diabetes; craving of alcohol may suggest alcoholism.
  • Is the craving uncontrolled? - may suggest addiction.
  • Causes of iron deficiency? - e.g. heavy periods, hemorrhoids, rectal bleeding, vomiting blood, peptic ulcer, bowel cancer, pregnancy, celiac disease, vegetarian diet.
  • Past medical history? - e.g. diabetes, Addison's disease, iron deficiency, depression, anxiety, eating disorders.
