Diagnostic tests for Dehydration:

Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Dehydration. Some of these are listed below :

  • Physical examination
    • Note any reduced level of consciousness which is a sign of poor brain perfusion due to dehydration
    • Blood pressure - low blood pressure is a late sign of dehydration. Postural hypotension is an early warning sign.
    • Pulse rate - elevated pulse rate is a reliable sign of dehydration in the young but not so reliable in the elderly or in patients on beta blocker or calcium channel blocker medications.
    • Full physical examination looking for explanation for dehydration is cause is not known

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Dehydration. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • How long have you been dehydrated? - to determine if acute or chronic.
  • What symptoms of dehydration do you have? - e.g. thirst, postural dizziness, fainting and reduced urine output. If a child may have less wet nappies, sunken eyes, lethargy, sunken fontanelle.
  • Fluid intake? - may suggest inadequate intake of fluid e.g. poor fluid intake due to illness, anorexia, malnutrition or neglect.
  • Recent excess sun exposure? - may suggest source of dehydration.
  • Recent heat exposure? - may suggest heat exhaustion as source of dehydration due to sweating.

See Diagnosis Checklist for Dehydration (18 listings)

Diagnosis Checklist: Associated symptoms your doctor may ask about (and why!)

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Dehydration) may include:

  • Vomiting? - may suggest the source of the dehydration e.g. hyperemesis gravidarum, viral gastroenteritis, food poisoning, meningitis, cyclic vomiting syndrome, pyloric stenosis (projectile vomiting), intestinal obstruction, cholera, peritonitis and pancreatitis.
  • Diarrhea? - may suggest the source of the diarrhea e.g. viral gastroenteritis, cholera, food poisoning, ulcerative colitis, short bowel syndrome, amoebic dysentery.
  • Fever? - fever itself may contribute to dehydration due to fluid loss. Fever may help determine cause of dehydration e.g. gastroenteritis, food poisoning, pancreatitis, heat exhaustion.
  • Excess urination? - may be source of the dehydration e.g. diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus, hyperparathyroidism, kidney failure, hypercalcaemia.
  • Sore mouth? - may be source of dehydration due to difficulty consuming fluids e.g. herpes stomatitis.
