Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)
During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Diabetes-like symptoms. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:
- How long have you had diabetes-like symptoms? - to determine if acute or chronic.
- What is your age? - e.g Type 1 diabetes patients are usually younger and lean, Type 2 diabetes patients are usually older and overweight.
- Are you pregnant? - may suggest gestational diabetes.
- Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes mellitus? - e.g. previous impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glycemia test; Aboriginal and Torres strait Islanders aged 35 years and over; certain high risk non- English speaking background groups aged 35 years and over (such as Pacific Islanders, Indian subcontinent, Chinese); people aged 45 years and over who have one of more of the following risk factors including obesity with BMI of greater or equal to 30, high blood pressure or first degree relative with Type 2 diabetes; previous heart attack, angina or stroke; previous gestational diabetes; obese women with polycystic ovarian syndrome.
- Past medical history? - e.g. polycystic ovarian syndrome, cirrhosis, cystic fibrosis, chronic pancreatitis, hemochromatosis, pancreatic cancer, Cushing's syndrome, Acromegaly, thyrotoxicosis, phaeochromocytoma, Friedreich's ataxia, myotonic dystrophy - are all conditions which can cause secondary diabetes.

Diagnosis Checklist: Associated symptoms your doctor may ask about (and why!)
Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Diabetes-like symptoms) may include:
- Symptoms of Diabetes mellitus? - Diabetes, particularly Type 2 diabetes is the most common cause of elevated blood sugars and diabetes-like symptoms e.g. frequency of urination, excessive thirst, weight loss (especially in Type 1 Diabetes mellitus), tiredness, fatigue, increased infections especially of the skin and genitals, blurry vision.
- Symptoms of complications of Diabetes mellitus? - e.g. staphylococcal skin infections, tingling or numbness of the feet, impotence, heart attack, intermittent claudication due to peripheral vascular disease - these complications may be the presenting features of diabetes.
- Symptoms of Diabetes insipidus? - e.g. abrupt onset of frequency of urination, excessive thirst, dehydration.
- Symptoms of hemochromatosis? - e.g. fatigue, painful joints, impotence, bronze discoloration of skin.
- Symptoms of cystic fibrosis? - e.g. recurrent chest infections, failure to thrive, weight loss, fatty oily stools.

Article Excerpts about Diabetes-like symptoms
Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism--the way our bodies use digested food for growth and energy. Most of the food we eat is broken down into glucose, the form of sugar in the blood. Glucose is the main source of fuel for the body.
After digestion, glucose passes into the bloodstream, where it is used by cells for growth and energy. For glucose to get into cells, insulin must be present. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas, a large gland behind the stomach.
When we eat, the pancreas is supposed to automatically produce the right amount of insulin to move glucose from blood into our cells. In people with diabetes, however, the pancreas either produces little or no insulin, or the cells do not respond appropriately to the insulin that is produced. Glucose builds up in the blood, overflows into the urine, and passes out of the body. Thus, the body loses its main source of fuel even though the blood contains large amounts of glucose. (Source: excerpt from Diabetes Overview: NIDDK)
Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal. People with diabetes have problems converting food to energy. After a meal, food is broken down into a sugar called glucose, which is carried by the blood to cells throughout the body. Cells use a chemical known as insulin, made in the pancreas, to help them process blood glucose into energy. (Source: excerpt from Am I at Risk for Type 2 Diabetes: NIDDK)
Diabetes mellitus is a group of diseases characterized by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Diabetes can be associated with serious complications and premature death, but people with diabetes can take measures to reduce the likelihood of such occurrences. (Source: excerpt from Diabetes Statistics in the United States: NIDDK)
Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism—the way our bodies use digested food for growth and energy. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose (a sugar) that our bodies use for energy. After digestion, the glucose enters the bloodstream where it is available for body cells to use for growth and energy. The pancreas, an organ near the stomach, produces a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the body's cells. With diabetes, the pancreas either doesn't make enough insulin or the body can't use the insulin properly (insulin resistance). As a result, glucose builds up in the blood, overflows into the urine, and passes out of the body instead of being used by the cells for energy. Thus, the body loses its main source of fuel even though the blood contains large amounts of glucose. (Source: excerpt from Diabetes: NWHIC)
