Diagnostic tests for Ear shapes:
Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Ear shapes. Some of these are listed below :
- Physical examination
- Inspect the nature of the shape and deformity of the ears
- Look for any dysmorphic ( abnormality of shape) features of face and body - e.g. Down syndrome, Fragile X, Incontinentia pigmenti, DiGeorge's syndrome, Coffin-Lowry syndrome.
- Cytogenetics for karyotyping - e.g. looking for genetic syndromes e.g. Down's syndrome, Fragile-X syndrome.

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)
During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Ear shapes.
Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing
your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information
you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis.
Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:
- Was the abnormal ear shape present at birth? - may suggest DiGeorge's syndrome (misshapen ears), Down syndrome, fragile X syndrome, incontinentia pigmenti, Coffin-Lowry syndrome (large ears).
- Is the ear shape abnormality unilateral or bilateral? - if unilateral the cause would likely be acquired after birth due to trauma or infection.
- Has there been trauma of the ear lobe or pinna of the ear? - trauma to the pinna of the ear (e.g. via contact sports) may result in a haematoma (localized mass of clotted blood) and later perichondritis (inflammation of the pinna cartilage) or abscess formation. If the haematoma or abscess is not surgically drained correctly it will result in a "cauliflower ear" deformity due to destruction of the cartilage.

Diagnosis Checklist: Associated symptoms your doctor may ask about (and why!)
Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse
your condition.
The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Ear shapes) may include:
- Symptoms of cauliflower ear?
- Symptoms of Coffin-Lowry syndrome? - e.g. mental retardation, wide bulbous nose, low nasal bridge, moderate excess hairiness, finger and nail abnormalities (especially the 5th finger) and large ears. The full syndrome occurs only in males.
- Symptoms of Down syndrome? - e.g. mental retardation, flat facial profile, excess neck skin, small low set ears, reduced tone of the muscles of the limbs, round head, protruding tongue, short broad hands, incurving 5th digits.
- Symptoms of Fragile X syndrome? - e.g. mental retardation, shy personality, long face, high forehead, large jaw, long ears, over flexible joints, large testicles.
- Symptoms of Incontinentia pigmenti? - e.g. brown skin streaks, mental retardation, disturbed dentition, eye defects, ear deformities.
