Misdiagnosis and Eye discharge

Antibiotics often causes diarrhea: The use of antibiotics are very likely to cause some level of diarrhea in patients. The reason is that antibiotics kill off not only "bad" bacteria, but can also kill the "good" bacteria in the gut. This leads to "digestive imbalance" where there are too few remaining "good" bacteria in the digestive system. The treatment is typically to use "probiotics", such as by eating yoghurt cultures containing more of the good bacteria. See digestive imbalance and probiotics....read more »

Diagnostic tests for Eye discharge:

Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Eye discharge. Some of these are listed below :

  • Physical examination
    • Inspect the eye noting the nature of redness, if present. This will help delineate conjunctivitis, episcleritis, scleritis and uveitis
    • Look for any foreign bodies, especially under the eyelids
    • Inspect under the upper eyelid for fine follicles (which indicate a viral infection) or for a cobblestone appearance (which indicates allergic conjunctivitis)
    • Use fluorescein staining of the cornea to detect any corneal ulceration which may cause a reflex watering of the eye. Branch like ulceration is diagnostic of herpes simples infection of the eye
    • Feel for enlarged lymph nodes in front of ears which are characteristic of viral conjunctivitis

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Eye discharge. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • How long have you had the eye discharge? - to determine if acute or chronic.
  • Is the eye discharge unilateral or bilateral?
  • What is the nature of the discharge? - e.g. purulent (pus-like) discharge usually indicates a bacterial infection; a clear watery or mucous discharge may suggest viral or allergic conjunctivitis.
  • Have you had a cold or running nose recently? - may indicate viral conjunctivitis.
  • Is there a history of eye trauma?
  • more questions...»
