Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Eyelash symptoms. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • How long have you had the eyelash symptoms? - to determine if acute or chronic.
  • What eyelash symptoms do you have? - e.g. matting and crusting of eyelashes may suggest blepharitis; graying of the eyelashes may suggest vitiligo; eyelashes that turn inwards towards the eye and scratch the surface of the eye may suggest trachoma.
  • Past medical history? - e.g. blepharitis may be associated with seborrheic dermatitis, eczema or Rosacea; vitiligo may be associated with thyroid disease, diabetes mellitus, pernicious anemia and Addison's disease.

Diagnosis Checklist: Associated symptoms your doctor may ask about (and why!)

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Eyelash symptoms) may include:

  • Symptoms of blepharitis? - e.g. eyelids have burning, itching and red margins, eyelashes may have crusting and scales, discharge or stickiness especially in the morning. If present for years there may be loss of eyelashes or distortion (in-growing) of the eyelashes. There may be a Staphylococcal bacterial infection which can cause severe inflammation with pus-like discharge.
  • Symptoms of trachoma? - e.g. watering eye, intense redness of the eye, scarring under the eyelids, ulcers on the surface of the eye, eyelid turn inwards and eyelashes scratch the surface of the eye. Trachoma is especially prevalent in outback areas and in aboriginal communities where hygiene may not be adequate.
  • Symptoms of vitiligo? - e.g. white de-pigmented patches of skin, white and prematurely graying hair and eyelashes, patchy scalp hair loss.
  • Dandruff of the scalp? - may suggest blepharitis as the cause of the eyelash symptoms as the commonest form of blepharitis is due to pityrosporon infection and is associated with the same infection (dandruff) of the scalp and eyebrows.
