  • Is the eyelid swelling generalized or localized? - e.g. localized swelling near the inner corner of the eye may suggest dacrocystitis; styes cause painful, red localized swelling of the lid margin, usually on the side of the lid closest to the nose; a chalazion (meibomian gland cyst) is a localized firm, non-tender lump in the lid; allergies, nephrotic syndrome, cellulitis, sinusitis usually cause generalized swelling of the eyelid.
  • Have you had a cold or running nose recently? - may indicate viral conjunctivitis.
  • Is there a history of exposure of a red discharging eye at school, work or home? - may indicate bacterial conjunctivitis.
