During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Eyelid swelling. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:
- How long have you had the eyelid swelling? - to determine if acute or chronic.
- Is the eyelid swelling unilateral or bilateral?
- Is the eyelid swelling generalized or localized? - e.g. localized swelling near the inner corner of the eye may suggest dacrocystitis; styes cause painful, red localized swelling of the lid margin, usually on the side of the lid closest to the nose; a chalazion (meibomian gland cyst) is a localized firm, non-tender lump in the lid; allergies, nephrotic syndrome, cellulitis, sinusitis usually cause generalized swelling of the eyelid.
- Have you had a cold or running nose recently? - may indicate viral conjunctivitis.
- Is there a history of exposure of a red discharging eye at school, work or home? - may indicate bacterial conjunctivitis.
