- Eye examination
- Visual acuity (vision testing of the eye) may be affected with corneal ulceration depending on the site of the ulcer
- Use local anesthetic drops instilled prior to examining a painful eye as it is a sensitive measure of a surface problem. If the pain is unrelieved a deeper problem must be suspected

- Evert the eyelid to inspect under the upper eyelid

- How long have you had the eyelid twitch? - to determine if acute or chronic.
- Is it unilateral or bilateral?
- Is there a history of eye trauma? - may indicate a corneal abrasion or corneal ulcer.
- Past medical history? - e.g. hemifacial spasm may be related to acoustic neuroma, Paget's disease, Bell's palsy. Blepharospasm may be associated with Parkinson's disease and progressive supranuclear palsy.
