Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Foot itch. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • How long have you had the foot itch? - to determine if acute or chronic.
  • Are both feet affected?
  • Are there any other areas of the body that are itchy? - e.g. in flexures such as front of elbow and behind knee may suggest dermatitis; dyshidrotic eczematous dermatitis (pompholyx) has a predilection for the sides of the fingers, palms and soles of feet.
  • If itchiness of the feet is localized, where on the feet is the skin itchy? - may assist in helping determine cause e.g. itchiness between the toes may suggest athlete's foot; on soles of feet of infants may suggest scabies; on soles of feet may suggest dyshidrotic eczematous dermatitis (pompholyx).
  • Have your feet been exposed to anything new - e.g. new shoes, chemicals ? - may suggest contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis is always confined to the site of exposure to the allergen.
