Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Foot ulcer. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • How long have you had an ulcer on the foot? - to determine if acute or chronic.
  • Do you think you noticed the ulcer when it began or is it possible that it could have been present for some time before you noticed it? - the latter is often the case with neuropathic ulcers.
  • Where exactly is the ulcer on the foot? - can help determine the cause of the foot ulcer e.g. venous ulcers usually occur on the medial side of the lower third of the leg but may occur further down on the foot; arterial ulcers are found on the tips of the toes and over pressure areas.
  • Is there a history of trauma to the area that has an ulcer? - may indicate a traumatic ulcer or an arterial ulcer that has developed due to poor healing subsequent to even minor trauma.
  • Do you have diabetes? - diabetes can be associated with both arterial ulcers (because of large vessel atherosclerosis) and neuropathic ulcers (because of peripheral neuropathy).
