Diagnostic tests for Fractures:

Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Fractures. Some of these are listed below :

  • Physical examination
    • Examine for signs of shock due to blood loss secondary to the fracture - e.g. pale skin and lips, cold clammy extremities, rapid pulse and low blood pressure.
    • Examine for associated damage to brain, spinal cord or internal organs secondary to the fracture
    • Examine for signs of a predisposing cause of the fracture - e.g. Paget's disease may have thickened bent lower legs with warm overlying skin, there may be bowing of the legs and enlarged skull.

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Fractures. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • Where is the fracture?
  • Is there a history of trauma or injury? - If the injury was nil or minimal may suggest osteoporosis or pathological fracture due to bone tumor or bone metastases.
  • What was the nature of the trauma or injury? - e.g. single traumatic incident or repetitive stress injury.
  • Risks of osteoporosis? - e.g. female sex, thin build, family history, early menopause, smoking, chronic alcoholism, high caffeine intake, low calcium intake, intestinal malabsorption, physical inactivity, prolonged corticosteroid use, Cushing's syndrome, diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism, hyperparathyroidism, Acromegaly, chronic renal failure.
  • Domestic violence or child abuse? - may suggest trauma as cause of fracture.
  • more questions...»

Diagnosis Checklist: Associated symptoms your doctor may ask about (and why!)

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Fractures) may include:

  • Pain, bruising and swelling? - are common symptoms of fractures, but they do not distinguish a fracture from a soft tissue injury.
  • Deformity of the bone? - much more suggestive of a fracture, as compared to a soft tissue injury.
  • Numbness of limb distal to fracture? - may suggest nerve injury secondary to fracture.
  • Skin pallor or blueness of limb distal to fracture? - may suggest arterial injury secondary to fracture.
  • If fracture of the spine or pelvis, is there any problem with urination? - may suggest urethral or bladder injury.
  • more symptoms...»
