Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Genital warts. Some of these are listed below :

    • Examine the genital area to inspect the number, size and location of the warts
  • Acetowhitening - warts that can not be visualized can be seen by soaking areas with 5% acetic acid for 5 minutes.

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Genital warts. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • Where in the genital region are the warts (condyloma acuminate)? - e.g. vulva, vagina, clitoris, cervix, around the anus, penis, scrotum.
  • Have you had any previous genital warts? - genital warts recur even after appropriate therapy in a high percentage of patients. If left untreated genital warts may resolve on their own, remain unchanged, or grow.
  • Have you ever had a pap smear of the cervix? If so, have you ever had an abnormal pap smear and when was the last pap smear? - Genital warts are caused by one or more types of human papilloma virus (HPV), most commonly 6 and 11, but sometimes types 16, 18, 31 and 33. The importance of HPV infection is that types 16,18, 31 and 33 are involved with the development of cervical cancer, vulval cancer and penile cancer. The risk of cervical cancer developing from vulval warts is small.
  • Sexual history? - The human papilloma virus that causes warts is usually (but not always) transmitted sexually. HPV is the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease in developed countries.

  • Local itching or burning? - In most cases, the genital warts are without symptoms but some people complain of local itching and burning.
