    • Examine for enlarged spleen which may suggest Hodgkin's disease, leukemia, lupus erythematosus, thrombocytopenic purpura or aplastic anemia - all of which may cause bleeding gums.
    • Examine for petechial body rash (pinhead size red rash) which is common in any disorder that might cause thrombocytopenia (reduced platelets) and thus bleeding gums

Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • How long have you had gum symptoms? - to determine if acute or chronic.
  • What specific symptoms concerning the gums do you have? - e.g. bleeding gums, swollen gums, tender gums, gum ulcers.
  • If gums have been bleeding, have you noticed any bleeding from other areas? - e.g. nose, easy bruising of skin, painful swelling of joints - may help determine if due to bleeding disorder.
  • If gums have been bleeding, have you noticed a viral illness or sore throat beforehand? - may suggest acute Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) especially in children.
  • Dental health? - when last saw a dentist?, dental care routine? Known dental caries? - may suggest gingivitis, periodontitis, Vincent's infection.
