Healing symptoms

Healing symptoms: Introduction

Further information about Healing symptoms is below, or review more specific information about these types of Healing symptoms: poor healing or other types.

Failure in the body's healing systems can itself be a symptom of various medical conditions. Metabolic conditions such as diabetes or Cushing's syndrome can interfere with the healing process. Poor circulation can also reduce healing effectiveness in affected areas. Any apparent lack of healing needs prompt professional medical investigation for diagnosis of any underlying condition.

  • Physical examination of the skin that has impaired healing
    • Site of ulcer - e.g. venous ulcers are usually found on the inner side of the lower third of the leg, but may occur lower down on the foot; arterial ulcers are found on the tips of the toes and over pressure areas; neuropathic ulcers occur over pressure areas.
    • Edge of the ulcer - e.g. the edge of a venous ulcer is usually sloping and pale purplish-blue in color; malignant change in a chronic venous ulcer causes a raised and thickened edge; syphilitic ulcer has a punched out edge; tuberculous ulcer has an undermined edge.
    • Base - e.g. venous ulcer is usually covered by granulation tissue ( area of new vessel growth) and white fibrous tissue; arterial ulcers usually have no granulation tissue; syphilitic ulcers have a base that looks like leather.

It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • How long have you had poor healing? - to determine if acute or chronic.
  • Where on the body do you have problems with poor healing? - if only on the lower legs this may suggest venous insufficiency, peripheral vascular disease (poor circulation) or neurological disease.
  • How old are you? - healing does reduce with normal aging.
  • Past medical history? - e.g. diabetes, Cushing's syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Autoimmune lymphoproliferative syndrome, kidney disease, jaundice, cancer, tuberculosis, AIDS, hemophilia or sickle cell disease may all cause poor healing.
  • Medications? - certain medications may cause poor healing such as corticosteroids, immune suppressants, cancer chemotherapy.
