Diagnostic tests for High blood pressure:

Various tests are used in the diagnosis of High blood pressure. Some of these are listed below :

  • Blood pressure
    • Sitting and standing in both arms
    • If initial reading is high ( diastolic over 90mmHg and/or systolic over 140mmHg) repeat the measurement after 5 minutes of rest
    • If only systolic reading is high may suggest hyperthyroidism, aortic insufficiency and arteriosclerotic aortitis
    • If high blood pressure is paroxysmal may suggest phaeochromocytoma
    • If blood pressure is high in arms but normal when taken in legs suggests coarctation of the aorta
  • Measure BMI using weight and height

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of High blood pressure. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • Previous history of elevated blood pressure? - Date of initial diagnosis and levels of elevated blood pressure.
  • Previous treatment for the elevated blood pressure? - what medications have you used in the past, what have been the result and any side effects from them.
  • Past medical history? - heart attacks , strokes, peripheral vascular disease, kidney disease, diabetes mellitus or recent weight gain.
  • Other cardiovascular risk factors? - e.g. obesity, elevated cholesterol, impaired glucose tolerance, smoking, salt intake, alcohol consumption, exercise levels, chronic consumption of large amounts of pain killers especially those containing phenacetin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications.
  • Are you pregnant? - elevated blood pressure affects between 3-8 % of all pregnant women, especially in the second half of the first pregnancy.

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with High blood pressure) may include:

  • Symptoms that may indicate the effects of high blood pressure on target organ damage - e.g. headache, shortness of breath and ankle swelling due to congestive cardiac failure, chest pain due to coronary artery disease, leg claudication due to peripheral vascular disease and blood in the urine due to renal damage.
  • Symptoms suggesting secondary causes of high blood pressure - e.g. leg claudication with coarctation of aorta; blood in urine with glomerulonephritis or polycystic kidneys; progressive weakness and need to urinate at night with Conn's syndrome; paroxysmal episodes of headache, pallor, sweating and heart palpitations with phaeochromocytoma; loud snoring, morning headache and daytime sleepiness with obstructive sleep apnea.

Article Excerpts about High blood pressure

Blood pressure measures the force of blood against the walls of your blood vessels. Blood pressure that remains high over time is called hypertension. Extra fluid in your body increases the amount of fluid in your blood vessels and makes your blood pressure higher. Narrow or clogged blood vessels also raise blood pressure.
