Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Hypercalcemia. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • Symptoms of elevated calcium? - symptoms are usually mild but may include loin pain form kidney stones; frequency of urination; blood in the urine; abdominal pain sometimes from peptic ulceration; bone pain; depression.
  • Risk factors for bone metastases? - Bone metastases may cause elevated calcium. The common primary tumors include lung cancer, breast cancer, myeloma, esophageal cancer, thyroid cancer, prostate cancer, lymphoma and renal cell cancer.
  • Recent history of significant immobilization? - may cause elevated calcium.
  • Family history? - e.g. multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (simultaneous recurrence of tumors involving parathyroid glands, pituitary, pancreas, adrenals and thyroid glands).

Diagnosis Checklist: Associated symptoms your doctor may ask about (and why!)

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Hypercalcemia) may include:

  • Symptoms of hyperthyroidism? - e.g. intolerance to heat, sweating of hands, muscle weakness, increased appetite, weight loss, heart palpitations, loose bowel motions, emotional lability, agitation, over activity.
  • Symptoms of Multiple myeloma? - e.g. bone pain (e.g. backache), bone tenderness, weakness, tiredness, recurrent infections, bleeding tendency.
  • Symptoms of bone metastases? - e.g. bone pain, fractures with minimal trauma, possible history of primary tumor (e.g. lung, breast, esophageal, thyroid, prostate, kidney).
  • Symptoms of Williams syndrome? - e.g. infants with mental retardation, elf-like facial features. Syndrome is associated with aortic stenosis (heart valve disease), elevated calcium and elevated Vitamin D levels.
