Misdiagnosis and Hyperkalemia
Unnecessary hysterectomies due to undiagnosed bleeding disorder in women: The bleeding disorder called Von Willebrand's disease is quite common in women, but often fails to be correctly diagnosed. Women with the condition tend to have heavy periods, since they actually have a bleeding disorder. Severe afflictions may result in the women receiving a hysterectomy unnecessarily, when the underlying cause has not been identified. See the introduction to Von Willebrand's disease and bleeding disorder....read more »

Diagnostic tests for Hyperkalemia:
Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Hyperkalemia. Some of these are listed below :
- Physical examination
- Blood pressure ( postural lowering of blood pressure with Addison's disease)
- Examine for signs of Addison's disease such as dehydration; dull grey-brown pigmentation in the mouth (around the molars), hands and in new scars; loss of body hair
- Blood tests
- Ensure tourniquet used to collect blood is not excessively tight as this can cause elevated potassium

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)
During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Hyperkalemia. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:
- Symptoms of elevated potassium? - may be without symptoms. Muscle weakness may be the only symptom.
- Complications of elevated potassium? - e.g. low blood pressure, reduced pulse rate, abnormal rhythms of the heart, cardiac arrest, sudden death.
- Recent vigorous exercise? - may cause elevated potassium.
- Recent severe burns? - may cause elevated potassium.
- Recent severe trauma, especially muscular crush injuries? - may cause elevated potassium.
See Diagnosis Checklist for Hyperkalemia (9 listings)
Diagnosis Checklist: Associated symptoms your doctor may ask about (and why!)
Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Hyperkalemia) may include:
- Symptoms of Addison's disease? - symptoms are often vague but may include e.g. weight loss, loss of appetite, tiredness, weakness, fever, depression, lack of menstrual periods, impotence, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, fainting, abdominal pain, constipation, muscle aches.
- Symptoms of acute renal failure? - The early stages of renal failure are often completely without symptoms. Later symptoms may include tiredness, loss of appetite, insomnia, frequency of urination, itch, nausea, vomiting, restless legs.
- Symptoms of diabetic acidosis? - include symptoms of uncontrolled type 1 Diabetes mellitus (frequency of urination, excessive thirst, weight loss, tiredness, fatigue) and symptoms of acidosis (lack of strength, rapid breathing, nausea, vomiting and sometimes abdominal pain).

Definitions of Hyperkalemia:
Hyperkalemia: A greater than normal concentration of potassium ions in the circulating blood. SYN: hyperkaliemia, hyperpotassemia. [hyper- + G. kalium, potash, + G. haima, blood]

Abnormally high potassium concentration in the blood, most often due to defective renal excretion. It is characterized clinically by electrocardiographic abnormalities (elevated T waves and depressed P waves, and eventually by atrial asystole). In severe cases, weakness and flaccid paralysis may occur. (Dorland, 27th ed)
