Diagnostic tests for Hypocalcemia:
Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Hypocalcemia. Some of these are listed below :
- Physical examination
- Examine for physical signs of low calcium including Chvostek's sign (gentle tapping over the facial nerve causes twitching of the facial muscles) and Trousseau's sign (inflation of the blood pressure cuff above diastolic blood pressure for 3 minutes causes muscular contraction of the fingers and wrist)
- Blood tests
- Full blood count
- Electrolytes, including calcium and phosphate levels
- Renal function tests (renal failure is the most common cause of low calcium)

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)
During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Hypocalcemia.
Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing
your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information
you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis.
Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:
- Symptoms of low calcium? - e.g. pins and needles, numbness around the mouth, cramps, anxiety, muscular contractions (tetany). The symptoms may be followed by seizures, stridor and psychosis.
- Sunlight exposure? - lack of sunlight exposure can cause Vitamin D deficiency and osteomalacia and thus low calcium.
- Past medical history? - e.g. acute pancreatitis, chronic renal failure, DiGeorge's syndrome, hypoparathyroidism.
- Past surgical history? - e.g. immediately following removal of thyroid or parathyroid low calcium levels are usually transient.
- Medications? - some medications may cause low calcium levels including calcitonin and diphosphonates; prolonged laxative use can cause low magnesium and thus low calcium.

- Symptoms of pseudohypoparathyroidism? - e.g. short stature, short metacarpal bones (hand bones), intellectual impairment.
- Symptoms of rickets? - e.g. bowing and bending of the legs when the child starts to walk, delayed dentition, muscular weakness.
