Diagnostic tests for Incontinence:

Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Incontinence. Some of these are listed below :

  • Physical examination
    • Inspect anal area for lesions - e.g. anal fissure, rectal prolapse, hemorrhoids or evidence of anal trauma.
    • Digital rectal examination to examine for a mass, to determine sphincter tone and competence and examine for enlarged prostate. If sphincter tone is normal consider diarrhea or anorectal conditions as a cause of bowel incontinence. If sphincter tone is abnormal consider congenital abnormalities, neurological conditions, rectal prolapse or trauma to sphincter as causes for bowel incontinence. If urinary incontinence and prostate or bladder is found to be enlarged should consider overflow incontinence from bladder neck obstruction, prostatic hypertrophy and tuberculosis of the bladder
    • May be asked to bear down while the examiner looks for a rectal prolapse

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Incontinence. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • How long have you had the problem of incontinence? - to determine if acute or chronic.
  • Is there incontinence of urine, bowel or both?
  • Is the bowel or urine incontinence intermittent or constant? - intermittent bowel incontinence may suggest epilepsy or delirium.
  • If bowel incontinence, is the stool volume small or large? - a small volume would suggest an anal fissure, hemorrhoids, diarrhea, post-operative incontinence after a removal of a fistula or other surgery in the rectal area.
  • If bowel incontinence, is the incontinence for solid, liquid or gaseous bowel contents?
  • more questions...»

Diagnosis Checklist: Associated symptoms your doctor may ask about (and why!)

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Incontinence) may include:

  • Diarrhea, either acute or chronic? - may be cause of bowel incontinence.
  • Rectal discharge of mucous? - may suggest anal ulcer, inflammatory bowel disease, rectal prolapse or hemorrhoids as the cause of bowel incontinence.
  • Bloody stool or rectal bleeding? - may suggest rectal cancer, ulcerative colitis, hemorrhoids or anal fissure as the cause of bowel incontinence.
  • Bowel Urgency? - may suggest diarrhea (most common), rectal cancer or proctitis (inflammation of the rectum) as the cause of bowel incontinence.
  • Anal lump? - may indicate rectal prolapse or hemorrhoids as the cause of bowel incontinence.
