Diagnostic tests for Lip pain:

Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Lip pain. Some of these are listed below :

  • Physical examination
    • Examine the lips for evidence of any lesions that may explain the pain - e.g. aphthous ulceration, angular stomatitis, herpetic blisters or ulceration.
    • Examine for any signs of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, polyarteritis nodosa, Buerger's disease, polycythaemia, leukemia, polymyositis, dermatomyositis that may cause Raynaud's phenomenon
  • Blood tests
    • Full blood count to look for signs of leukemia or polycythaemia which may cause Raynaud's phenomenon
    • ESR may be raised in lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, Rheumatoid arthritis, polyarteritis nodosa
    • Electrolytes

  • How long have you had lip pain? - to determine if acute or chronic.
  • Is it intermittent or constant? - if intermittent may suggest Raynaud's phenomenon.
  • Is pain limited to the lips? - e.g. Raynaud's phenomenon may also cause characteristic color changes and associated pain to fingers and toes.
  • History of trauma/ injury to the lips? - may cause traumatic ulceration or bruising.
  • History of insect bite or sting? - may help determine cause of lip pain.

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Lip pain) may include:
