Diagnostic tests for Liver symptoms:
Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Liver symptoms. Some of these are listed below :
- General appearance
- General appearance - looking for jaundice (yellowing of the skin and sclera of the eyes), signs of recent weight loss, physical distress.
- Physical examination
- Inspect the abdomen for generalized distension which may indicate ascites (collection of fluid in the abdominal cavity). If ascites is associated with tender liver may indicate Budd-Chiari syndrome (hepatic vein thrombosis) or right heart failure
- Palpate the liver - to assess liver tenderness, size of the liver, to detect liver pulsatility and to feel the liver edge. A tender liver may be due to hepatitis, rapid liver enlargement (due to right heart failure or Budd-Chiari syndrome), hepatocellular cancer, ascending cholangitis or hepatic abscess. A pulsatile liver that is also tender would suggest hepatocellular cancer. If there is jaundice but little or no enlargement of the liver this would suggest hemolytic anemia, Gilbert's disease , pernicious anemia and Dubin-Johnson syndrome.

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)
During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Liver symptoms.
Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing
your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information
you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis.
Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:
- How long have you had liver symptoms? - to determine if acute or chronic.
- What liver symptoms do you have? - e.g. enlarged liver, jaundice, liver pain, tender liver.
- Do you, or have you ever owned a dog as a pet? - may indicate increased risk of hydatid disease. Hydatid disease occurs when humans ingest the embryos of the dog tapeworm which may occur with direct contact with infected dogs or by eating uncooked, improperly washed vegetables contaminated with infected canine feces.
- Risk factors for viral hepatitis? - e.g. African or Far eastern country of origin, recent consumption of shellfish (may suggest hepatitis A), intravenous drug use, tattoos, male homosexuality, female prostitution, recent travel to areas with increased risk of hepatitis A, needle stick injury.
- Has there been a recent snake bite? - snake venom may cause jaundice.

Diagnosis Checklist: Associated symptoms your doctor may ask about (and why!)
Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse
your condition.
The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Liver symptoms) may include:
- Abdominal pain, and if so where exactly is the pain? - may suggest biliary obstruction due to gallstones but any cause of enlarged liver may cause abdominal pain due to distention of the liver capsule. Abdominal pain in a person with jaundice may suggest common duct stones, sclerosing cholangitis, pancreatic cancer, bile duct cancer, pancreatitis, viral or alcoholic hepatitis.
- Jaundice (yellow skin and sclera)? - may suggest hemolytic anemia; toxic or infectious hepatitis; bile duct obstruction due to gallstones, carcinoma of the pancreas or ampulla of Vater; hepatic abscess or biliary cirrhosis.
- Dark urine and pale stools? - occurs with obstructive or cholestatic type jaundice such as gallstones, cancer of the pancreas, cancer of the bile duct, strictures of the bile duct, some medications, recurrent jaundice of pregnancy.
- Itching of the skin? - suggests cholestatic liver disease such as viral hepatitis, alcoholic hepatitis, recurrent jaundice of pregnancy, primary biliary cirrhosis, common bile duct gallstones, cancer of the bile ducts, cholangitis, pancreatitis, biliary stricture, some medications.
- Fever? - may suggest viral hepatitis, infectious mononucleosis, leptospirosis, ascending cholangitis, hepatic vein thrombosis, liver abscess and toxic hepatitis.
