Diagnostic tests for Low blood pressure:
Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Low blood pressure. Some of these are listed below :
- Physical examination
- Inspect for pallor of skin and conjunctiva which may suggest anemia or shock
- Inspect for increased pigmentation of the skin which may suggest Addison's disease. The increased pigmentation of Addison's disease is characterized by the "sun kissed" pigmentation of the nipples, palmar creases, pressure area and mouth
- Look for signs of shock - e.g. elevated heart rate, low blood pressure, mottled skin, altered level of consciousness, reduced urine output.
- Blood pressure taken when lying down and again after rapidly arising to standing position - Postural drop in blood pressure suggests orthostatic hypotension. Hypotension is a relative term e.g. an elderly person whose usual blood pressure is 190/100 may be in shock with a blood pressure of 120/80. An infant's normal blood pressure may be 80/60.

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)
During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Low blood pressure. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:
- How long have you had low blood pressure? - to determine if acute or chronic.
- What symptoms of low blood pressure do you have? - e.g. faintness with standing, fainting, lightheadedness, dizziness.
- Is the low blood pressure found only on standing? - This suggests orthostatic hypotension, which may be due to several causes, including hypopituitarism (low pituitary gland function), diabetic neuropathy, anemia and various cardiovascular disorders.
- Possible sources of low blood volume? - e.g. trauma, external bleeding, rectal bleeding, bloody stool, vomiting blood, coffee-ground colored vomit, excessive vomiting, excessive diarrhea.
- Fluid intake? - may suggest significantly inadequate intake of fluid and dehydration as cause of low blood pressure e.g. poor fluid intake due to illness, anorexia, malnutrition or neglect.
See Diagnosis Checklist for Low blood pressure (21 listings)
Diagnosis Checklist: Associated symptoms your doctor may ask about (and why!)
Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Low blood pressure) may include:
- Fever? - may suggest septic shock due to infection as possible cause of low blood pressure. Low blood pressure is a late sign in septic shock.
- Chest pain? - may suggest heart attack or pulmonary embolism.
- Shortness of breath? - may suggest pulmonary embolism, allergy, anemia, pneumonia, pulmonary edema.
- Symptoms of congestive cardiac failure? - e.g. shortness of breath on exertion, bilateral ankle swelling that is usually symmetrical and worse in the evenings, with improvement during the night. As the heart failure progresses, swelling ascends to involve the legs, thighs, genitalia and abdomen.
- Symptoms of Diabetes mellitus? - e.g. frequency of urination, excessive thirst, weight loss (especially in Type 1 Diabetes mellitus), tiredness, fatigue, increased infections especially of the skin and genitals, blurry vision. Diabetic neuropathy, a complication of diabetes mellitus may cause low blood pressure.
