    • Examine health of lips, mouth, gums and teeth. Note dental hygiene, mouth ulcers, mouth trauma from dentures and signs of mouth infections

    • Full physical examination may reveal features of systemic disease - e.g. Cancer, HIV infection, Syphilis, tuberculosis, Ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease.

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Mouth ulcers. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition.   • How long have you had the mouth ulcers? - to determine if acute or chronic.
  • Where are the mouth ulcers? - e.g. if on the lip may suggest herpes simplex labialis (cold sore), syphilis or lip cancer.
  • Have you had mouth ulcers in the past, if yes how frequently and when was the last time you had mouth ulcers? - Aphthous ulcers in the mouth are extremely common and the majority of adults will experience aphthous ulcers at some time during their lives however some medical conditions may cause recurrent mouth ulceration such as Crohn's disease, pernicious anemia, Behcet's disease and HIV infection.
  • Recent local trauma to the mouth? - minor mouth injury is the most common cause of mouth ulceration e.g. injury from a toothbrush whilst brushing teeth, biting of the cheek.
  • Dental health? - when last saw a dentist?, dental care routine? Known dental caries? - Poor oral hygiene may be associated with Vincent's infection and oral cancer which may both cause mouth ulceration.
