Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Nasal voice. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • How long have you had problems with the nasal voice? - to determine if acute or chronic. If nasal voice is acute it usually suggests a viral upper respiratory tract infection, common cold, adenoiditis, blocked nose, nasal foreign body or a deviated nasal septum due to trauma. If nasal voice is chronic it may suggest normal genetic variation, deviated nasal septum due to developmental abnormalities, chronic sinusitis, nasal polyp, nasal tumor or poliomyelitis.
  • Is there a possibility that there may be a foreign body in the nose? - may explain the nasal voice. Nasal foreign bodies are common in children who frequently place pebbles, beads, seeds, buttons or paper into the nostrils.
  • History of trauma? - nasal trauma may cause a nasal voice possibly due to a deviated nasal septum.
  • Past medical history? - e.g. allergic rhinitis predisposes to nasal polyp formation and sinusitis; allergic rhinitis is often associated with asthma.
  • Allergies? - e.g. allergic rhinitis may be initiated by allergies to pollens, inhaled dust, dust mite, animal dander and fungal spores.
