Diagnostic tests for Odor symptoms:
Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Odor symptoms. Some of these are listed below :
- Note level of self care - may suggest poor hygiene if unkempt and dirty.
- Note nature of breath odor - if sweet may suggest diabetic ketoacidosis ( sickly sweet smell), alcoholism ( distinctive), liver failure( a sweet smell) and maple syrup urine disease; if unpleasant or foul may suggest renal failure (urine or fish-like breath due to ammonia), anaerobic infections of the mouth, nose, pharynx or chest (putrid) or cigarettes ( distinctive).
- Examine state of teeth and teeth hygiene and note whether the teeth are real or false - loose fitting teeth may be responsible for mouth ulcers or decayed teeth which may cause breath odor.
- Remove false teeth for complete examination

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)
During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Odor symptoms.
Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing
your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information
you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis.
Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:
- How long have you had the odor symptoms? - to determine if acute or chronic.
- Do you know where the odor is coming from? - e.g. breath, body, stool, foot.
- Who has noticed the odor symptoms? - e.g. may suggest Psychogenic halitosis (i.e. anxiety about breath odor often without having it) if you have noticed the breath odor and others have not.
- What is your teeth and gum hygiene routine? - to establish the possibility of breath odor being due to poor hygiene or anaerobic infections of the mouth.
- When was the last time you went to a dentist for a check-up? - to establish the possibility of mouth or dental disease as cause of breath odor.

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse
your condition.
The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Odor symptoms) may include:
- Excessive perspiration? - may be cause of body odor.
- Dry mouth - e.g. on waking? - may be cause of breath odor.
- Vaginal or penile discharge? - may suggest vaginitis or urethritis as the cause of body odor.
- Itchy, scaling, odorous feet? - may suggest tinea pedis (Athlete's foot) as the cause of foot odor.
- Foul smelling stool? - may suggest steatorrhea ( fatty, pale colored, extremely smelly stools that float in the toilet and are difficult to flush away) due to excess fat in the stool and are characteristic of malabsorption of nutrients which may be due to celiac disease, chronic pancreatitis, previous gastrectomy and cystic fibrosis. May also represent Giardia infection.
