Symptom: Pancreas symptoms

Introduction: Pancreas symptoms

The pancreas has two main functions: the exocrine half helps digestion by producing digestive enzymes, and the endocrine half produces insulin and other hormones for the processing of glucose in the blood. Damage to the digestive side of the pancreas can cause various digestive symptoms and be caused by several types of pancreas damage or disease. Failure of the endocrine pancreas interferes with glucose tolerance and leads to conditions such as diabetes. Any pancreatic symptoms are serious and need medical investigation.

Diagnostic tests for Pancreas symptoms:

Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Pancreas symptoms. Some of these are listed below :

  • Physical examination
    • Examine for signs of complications of Diabetes mellitus including cataracts, diabetes retinopathy, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, Candida skin and genital infections and peripheral neuropathy
    • Examine for signs of secondary causes of hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugar) - e.g. Cushing's syndrome, hemochromatosis, Conn's syndrome, cystic fibrosis, Acromegaly.
    • Examine for signs of acute pancreatitis including fever, increased heart rate, pale skin, sweating, anxiety, weakness, tenderness in the upper abdomen, reduced bowel sounds and sometimes distended abdomen
    • Look for evidence of jaundice - e.g. yellows skin and sclera of eyes - may suggest cancer of the pancreas or chronic pancreatitis.

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Pancreas symptoms. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • How long have you had pancreas symptoms? - to determine if acute or chronic.
  • What pancreas symptoms do you have? - The pancreas has two main functions: the exocrine half helps digestion by producing digestive enzymes, and the endocrine half produces insulin and other hormones for the processing of glucose in the blood. Damage to the digestive side of the pancreas can cause various digestive symptoms and be caused by several types of pancreas damage or disease. Failure of the endocrine pancreas interferes with glucose tolerance and leads to conditions such as diabetes.
  • What is your age? - e.g. Type 1 diabetes patients are usually younger and lean, Type 2 diabetes patients are usually older and overweight. Most people with cancer of the pancreas are over 60 years of age. Cystic fibrosis presents in childhood.
  • Are you pregnant? - may suggest gestational diabetes.
  • Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes mellitus? - e.g. previous impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glycemia test; Aboriginal and Torres strait Islanders aged 35 years and over; certain high risk non- English speaking background groups aged 35 years and over (such as Pacific Islanders, Indian subcontinent, Chinese); people aged 45 years and over who have one of more of the following risk factors including obesity with BMI of greater or equal to 30, high blood pressure or first degree relative with Type 2 diabetes; previous heart attack, angina or stroke; previous gestational diabetes; obese women with polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Diagnosis Checklist: Associated symptoms your doctor may ask about (and why!)

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Pancreas symptoms) may include:

  • Obesity? - Type 2 Diabetes is often associated with truncal obesity. Cushing's syndrome is also associated with truncal obesity.
  • Fever? - may suggest acute pancreatitis.
  • Abdominal pain? - may suggest acute or chronic pancreatitis, cancer of the pancreas or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
  • Symptoms of Diabetes mellitus? - Diabetes, particularly Type 2 diabetes is the most common cause of elevated blood sugars and diabetes-like symptoms e.g. frequency of urination, excessive thirst, weight loss (especially in Type 1 Diabetes mellitus), tiredness, fatigue, increased infections especially of the skin and genitals, blurry vision.
  • Symptoms of complications of Diabetes mellitus? - e.g. staphylococcal skin infections, tingling or numbness of the feet, impotence, heart attack, intermittent claudication due to peripheral vascular disease - these complications may be the presenting features of diabetes.
