Misdiagnosis and Pituitary symptoms

Pituitary conditions often undiagnosed cause of symptoms: There are a variety of symptoms that can be caused by a pituitary disorder (see symptoms of pituitary disorders). For example, fatigue, headache, weight gain, diabetes-like symptoms, and various other symptoms. Pituitary tumors and other similar conditions are not as rare as physicians tend to believe. Diagnostic tests for Pituitary symptoms:

Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Pituitary symptoms. Some of these are listed below :

  • Physical investigations
    • Full neurological examination
    • Examine for signs of Cushing's syndrome? - e.g. thin skin, bruising, high blood pressure, stretch marks, proximal muscle weakness, acne, pigmentation, excess hair on face, frontal balding in males, moon face, buffalo hump, truncal obesity, fluid retention.
    • Examine for signs of hypothyroidism - e.g. slow heart rate, slowed reflexes, coarse dry brittle hair, dry cool skin.
  • Visual field testing - to detect either a local or general reduction in the area of field). Use Confrontation testing, Perimetry testing and Central field testing. Mapping the visual field defect can help determine cause. e.g. an early pituitary tumor may cause a loss of both outer upper fields of vision and later extend to a loss of both outer upper and outer lower fields of vision.
  • Blood tests
    • Full blood count, electrolytes, renal function tests

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Pituitary symptoms. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • How long have you had pituitary symptoms? - to determine if acute or chronic.
  • What pituitary symptoms do you have? - e.g. galactorrhea (breast milk production), lack of menstrual periods, impotence, infertility, headache, visual field defects, abdominal obesity, growth failure in children, double vision.
  • Past surgical history? - e.g. Nelson's syndrome is a rare syndrome of increased pigmentation associated with an enlarging pituitary tumor occurring after bilateral adrenalectomy (removal of both adrenal glands for treatment of Cushing's syndrome); hypothalamic-pituitary surgery is the most common cause of diabetes insipidus.
