Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Placenta symptoms. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • What placenta symptoms do you have? - e.g. vaginal bleeding, lower abdominal pain, reduced fetal movements, absent fetal movements.
  • Risk factors for placenta praevia (placenta is implanted in the lower part of the uterus and below the presenting part of the fetus)? - e.g. multiple births (such as twins or triplets), previous caesarian section, IVF pregnancy, multiparity (multiple previous pregnancies), abnormal placenta forms (such as placenta accrete).
  • Risk factors for placental abruption? - e.g. high blood pressure, poor nutrition, previous placental abruption, physical trauma, diabetes, cigarette smoking, multiparity (multiple previous pregnancies).
  • more questions...»

Diagnosis Checklist: Associated symptoms your doctor may ask about (and why!)

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Placenta symptoms) may include:

  • Vaginal bleeding after the 20th week of pregnancy? - diagnostic of "antepartum hemorrhage" and should exclude the possibility of placenta praevia, placental abruption and a bleeding disorder.
  • Symptoms of retained placenta? - e.g. placenta undelivered at 1 hour after delivery of the baby, may have excessive vaginal bleeding. A placenta that does not separate even with attempted manual removal may represent placenta accreta (when the placenta has invaded the uterus muscle) which may require hysterectomy.
  • Symptoms of placenta praevia (placenta is implanted in the lower part of the uterus and below the presenting part of the fetus)? - e.g. unexpected painless vaginal bleeding usually around 28-30 weeks gestation, may have recurrent small vaginal bleeds before a larger heavier vaginal bleed.
  • Symptoms of placental abruption (hemorrhage from the detachment of a normally situated placenta from the uterus wall)? - e.g. poorly localized constant lower abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, tender tense lower abdominal wall.
  • Symptoms of retained products of conception? - e.g. continued heavy vaginal blood loss after the delivery of the baby, temperature, offensive vaginal discharge, pelvic pain.
  • more symptoms...»
