Poor feeding

Poor feeding: Introduction

An infant may feed poorly for numerous reasons, some of which are very serious. Poor feeding can lead to weight loss which in an infant is often called failure to thrive. Even if weight is not lost, poor growth may indicate a medical problem. Any infant with poor feeding needs medical attention for correct diagnosis.

Diagnostic tests for Poor feeding:

Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Poor feeding. Some of these are listed below :

  • General appearance and observation
    • Looking for any dysmorphic ( abnormality of shape) features of face and body that may affect feeding - e.g. Down syndrome, cleft palate, Pierre Robin syndrome (small jaw, cleft palate and downward displacement of the tongue), fetal alcohol syndrome (narrow space between the eyes, short nose, small face, small upper lip), Zellweger syndrome.
    • Observe the child's behavior and interaction with yourself. If child is alert, interested in new objects, keen to explore and relates in a friendly manner, a feeding problem is more likely because of an isolated condition rather than global retardation
  • Physical examination

Diagnosis Checklist: Questions your doctor may ask (and why!)

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in their assessment of Poor feeding. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor about your symptoms may help them with their diagnosis. Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  • When did the poor feeding start?
  • Is the infant being breast fed or bottle fed?
  • What are the feeding patterns?
  • If breast feeding, what is attachment to the nipple like? - e.g. does the baby get a good mouthful of breast.
  • If bottle feeding, does the teat's hole allow milk to flow through adequately?
  • more questions...»

Diagnosis Checklist: Associated symptoms your doctor may ask about (and why!)

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Poor feeding) may include:

  • Weight loss? - Poor feeding can lead to weight loss which in an infant is often called failure_to_thrive. Even if weight is not lost, poor_growth may indicate a medical problem.
  • Developmental delay? - e.g. gross motor skills, fine motor function, language, hearing, social skills and understanding.
  • Shortness of breath? - If shortness of breath is severe it will affect feeding e.g. congenital heart disease, heart failure, asthma, cystic fibrosis.
  • Jaundice (yellow discoloration of skin and sclera)? - If babies are jaundiced they may be sleepy and thus feed poorly.
  • more symptoms...»
