Diagnostic tests for Scalp symptoms:

Various tests are used in the diagnosis of Scalp symptoms. Some of these are listed below :

  • Skin examination
    • Inspect carefully for head lice or eggs of Pediculus humanus
    • Capitus which are glued to the hair shafts
    • Note characteristics of any scalp rash - e.g. macular, papular, pustular, vesicular, bullous, scaly - will help determine the cause of the scalp rash (e.g. a macular or papular rash may suggest eczema, contact dermatitis, exfoliative dermatitis or a drug reaction; a pustular rash may suggest staphylococcus or a fungal skin infection; a vesicular or bullous rash may suggest chicken pox, dermatitis herpetiformis, contact dermatitis or bullous impetigo; a scaly rash may suggest psoriasis, fungal skin infection, dandruff, pityriasis capitis (dandruff) and seborrheic dermatitis).
  • Blood tests
    • Radioallergosorbent testing (RAST) - may help in determining exacerbating allergens in atopic dermatitis (eczema).
    • ANA and ds DNA autoantibodies, if suspect lupus erythematosus which may cause disc-shaped patches on the scalp and patchy hair loss

  • Contact with anyone that also has scalp or other skin symptoms? - e.g. may suggest chicken pox, impetigo or head lice.
  • Past history of skin disorders that may cause scalp symptoms? - e.g. atopic dermatitis (eczema), seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, dermatitis herpetiformis.

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. The symptoms your doctor may ask about (in association with Scalp symptoms) may include:

  • Itchy scalp, and if so is the itch mild, moderate or severe?
  • Fever? - may suggest chicken pox, Steven's -Johnson syndrome.
  • Headache? - scalp skin tenderness is a feature of muscle contraction headache (tension headache).
  • Symptoms of psoriasis vulgaris of the scalp? - e.g. thick patches of adherent scale on the scalp, mild to moderate itch. May be associated with psoriasis lesions on other parts of the body including elbows and knees. May be complicated by arthritis and nail symptoms.
  • Symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis? - e.g. yellow-red, scaly, greasy and itchy rash of the scalp. May also affect the ears, face, eyebrows, around the eyes, around the nose, centre of the chest and centre of the back. Dandruff is a feature of the scalp area. In infants, scalp involvement is called "cradle cap".
