Introduction: Whitening
Further information about Whitening is below, or review more specific information about these types of Whitening: hypopigmentation, white patches, White Nails, White skin patches, Decreased pigmentation, Vitiligo, Uremic frost or other types.
Whitening of the skin often refers to a loss of pigment from the skin, called hypopigmentation. Lightening of the skin due to paleness is more properly called pallor. Any skin whitening or paleness symptoms need prompt professional medical advice.

Causes of Whitening:

- Some causes of local whitening of the skin or white patches include:
- Vitiligo - causing white patches
- Hypopigmentation

- Tinea versicolor - a mainly upper body rash that starts brown but goes whiter.
- Raynaud's phenomenon - may cause various skin color changes between red, white, and blue.

- Arterial blockage
- Peripheral vascular disease
- Phlegmasia alba dolens - causing a pale and cold leg.
- Leprosy
