Diagnostic Test list for Baldness:

The list of diagnostic tests mentioned in various sources as used in the diagnosis of Baldness includes:

  • Physical examination
    • Is baldness focal or diffuse?
    • Is there an associated rash?
    • Is it characteristic of male pattern baldness?
    • In women with male pattern baldness , look for signs of virilisation such as clitoral enlargement , acne , facial hirsuitism - may suggest endocrine dysfunction.
    • Scalp and hair scrapings for culture - looking for fungal infection.
    • Skin biopsy - may help identify lupus erythematosus, psoriasis and alopecia areata.
  • Blood tests
    • Full blood count
    • Iron studies
  • Other tests
    • Thyroid function test to detect hypothyroidism and hypothyroidism
    • Antinuclear antibody (ANA) assay - can help diagnose lupus erythematosus if baldness is focal, with a rash.
    • Syphilis serology if baldness is focal, without a rash
    • Total testosterone, free testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), and prolactin - should be measured in women with male pattern baldness and evidence of increased androgens ( e.g. menstrual irregularities, infertility, hirsuitism, severe acne).
