Questions Your Doctor May Ask - and Why!

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in his assesment of the symptom: Bleeding after sex. These may include a physical examination or other medical tests. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor may help them with their diagnosis.

Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  1. Was the bleeding after particularly rough sexual intercourse?

    Why: cervical or vaginal trauma may be the cause of bleeding after sexual intercourse.

  2. Were there any lesions or bleeding on your partner's penis?

    Why: penile bleeding or blood in the semen may be confused with vaginal bleeding after intercourse.

  3. Do you use an Intra-uterine device (IUD) for contraceptive?

    Why: may be source of bleeding after intercourse.

  4. Past medical history?

    Why: of bleeding disorder.

  5. Past family history?

    Why: of bleeding disorder.

  6. Do you use the oral contraceptive pill?

    Why: may predispose to bleeding after intercourse and may need changing to a different type e.g. higher dosage.

  7. Medications?

    Why: some medications may increase the risk of bleeding e.g. aspirin , anti-inflammatory medications, anticoagulant medications.

Questions your doctor may ask about related symptoms:

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. These may include:

  1. Bleeding in between the periods not related to sexual intercourse
  2. Vaginal discharge

    Why: may suggest chronic cervicitis, vaginitis.

  3. Pregnancy symptoms

    Why: may suggest placenta praevia, placental abruption, hydatidiform mole.
