Questions Your Doctor May Ask - and Why!

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in his assesment of the symptom: Bleeding from ear. These may include a physical examination or other medical tests. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor may help them with their diagnosis.

Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  1. Has there been any trauma to ear?

    Why: e.g. penetrating injury, direct blow, loud noise, pressure changes - may suggest ear drum perforation or canal trauma.

  2. Have you been cleaning your ears out with any foreign object?

    Why: may have caused ear canal trauma or accidental foreign body.

  3. Has there been a recent head injury?

    Why: at risk of basal skull fracture which can cause bloody discharge from ear.

  4. Past medical history?

    Why: e.g. bleeding disorder, recurrent ear infections.

  5. Family history?

    Why: of bleeding disorder.

Questions your doctor may ask about related symptoms:

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. These may include:

  1. Ear pain

    Why: may suggest ear infection, boil, cholesteatoma, foreign body, ear canal injury.

  2. Ear discharge e.g. pus, mucous or clear

    Why: may suggest ear infection, cholesteatoma, foreign body.

  3. Fever?

    Why: may suggest ear infection.
