  • Physical examination
    • Ear examination - looking for the site of any active bleeding, presence of ear infection , ear drum perforation, ear canal injury, foreign body, boil, ear polyp or ear tumor.
    • Swab of ear discharge for microscopy and culture - to rule out infection.
    • If history of head injury or skull fracture - look for other signs of basal skull fracture including blood behind the ear drum; cerebrospinal fluid leak into nose as well as ears; bruising around both eyes; cranial nerve injury.
    • Examine for signs of bleeding disorder e.g. bruising
