Misdiagnosis of Blood in urine

Misdiagnosis and Blood in urine

Unnecessary hysterectomies due to undiagnosed bleeding disorder in women: The bleeding disorder called Von Willebrand's disease is quite common in women, but often fails to be correctly diagnosed. Women with the condition tend to have heavy periods, since they actually have a bleeding disorder. Severe afflictions may result in the women receiving a hysterectomy unnecessarily, when the underlying cause has not been identified. See the introduction to Von Willebrand's disease and bleeding disorder.

Interstitial cystitis an under-diagnosed bladder condition: The medical condition of interstitial cystitic is a bladder condition that can be misdiagnosed as various conditions such as overactive bladder or other causes of pelvic pain. This condition can cause chronic pelvic pain or symptoms of urinary incontinence, similar to overactive bladder. Millions of patients may be misdiagnosed - an estimated third of the 9 million women with chronic pelvic pain (CPP) or 4.5 million of the 17 million women with overactive bladder syndrome do not respond well to treatment, and may have interstitial cystitis rather than their given diagnosis. In other words, about 6 million US women may have misdiagnosed interstitial cystitis. See interstitial cystitis or overactive bladder, or incontinence.

Lack of early signs in renal cell carcinoma: Renal cell carcinoma lacks early warning signs and makes a much generalised presentation. Hence the chances of it being misdiagnosed are higher. It has to be differentiated from conditions like renal abscess, metastatic disease, infected or hemorrhagic cyst and lymphoma. The prognosis of patients with RCC depends on its stage at diagnosis. The prognosis is worst for patients with metastatic disease at presentation and best for patients with small masses confined to the kidney.

Prostate cancer can present late: Prostate cancer is the most common noncutaneous cancer among males. Patients with prostate cancer commonly present with local symptoms such as urinary retention, back or leg pain and hematuria. However none of these symptoms are is unique to prostate cancer and each could arise from various other ailments. Most of the patients are asymptomatic. Men found to be diagnosed with low- grade prostate cancers have a minimal risk of dying from prostate cancer upto 20 years after diagnosis whereas men with severe forms of prostate cancer have a higher risk of dying within 10 years.

Rare case of Goodpasture syndrome: Good pasture syndrome is a rare autoimmune disease. Patients with this disease experience a rapid progression to renal failure and death if not recognized and treated early. It can be misdiagnosed as Wegener’s granulomatosis, polyarteritis nodosa, systemic lupus erythematosus etc. the occurrence of hemoptysis in Good pasture’s syndrome can lead to misdiagnosis as other disease states like left ventricular failure, atrioventricular fistula, pulmonary embolism and hypertension. A complete analysis of the patient’s history and investigations helps in coming to the right diagnosis.

Prostate cancer or BPH: Cancer of the prostate gland is one of the most common cancers in men. Early diagnosis of prostate cancer, when it is confined to the gland and hasn't metastasised ensures timely treatment and increases chances of survival. Since a person with prostate cancer often presents with lower urinary tract symptoms, it is very often misdiagnosed as Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy and treated accordingly. Therefore routine screening for prostate cancer including prostate specific antigen and digital rectal examination is recommended in all men above 50 years and earlier still in those with risk factors and symptoms.
