The list of diagnostic tests mentioned in various sources as used in the diagnosis of Brain swelling includes:

  • Physical examination
    • Note increase in head circumference measurements out of proportion to other body dimensions or a single head circumference measurement which greatly exceeds the 97th percentile
    • Note large and bulging fontanelle; thinning of the bones of the skull; widening of the sutures; thin, shiny pale scalp; sparse hair; distended superficial scalp veins
    • Neurological examination including looking for papilledema
    • Evaluate the mental status
    • Examine for signs of complications of longstanding brain swelling e.g. diabetes insipidus , early puberty and abnormal temperature control
    • Examine for various abnormalities that are associated with hydrocephalus (swelling of the brain) e.g. spina bifida, skeletal defects and moles on the skin
  • Radiological investigation
    • Skull X-Ray
    • Brain ultrasound scan ( through the open fontanelle in young children)
    • CT Scan or MRI brain is investigation of choice in older children and adults) - can assist in defining the cause of the brain swelling.
