Questions Your Doctor May Ask - and Why!

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in his assesment of the symptom: Bronchitis. These may include a physical examination or other medical tests. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor may help them with their diagnosis.

Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  1. How long have you had the symptoms?

    Why: to determine if acute or chronic bronchitis.

  2. Have there been any other similar exacerbations?
  3. Cigarette smoking history?

    Why: it is the major cause of chronic bronchitis.

Questions your doctor may ask about related symptoms:

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. These may include:

  1. Cough?

    Why: In chronic bronchitis, there is often a history of cough and sputum production for many years. Initially the cough is present in winter months only but with time the cough is year round.

  2. Sputum

    Why: color and quantity?

  3. Breathing difficulties with exertion?
  4. Audible wheeze?

    Why: may suggest acute or chronic bronchitis (but also asthma, airways obstruction (by a foreign body or tumor).

  5. Blue lips and skin?

    Why: may indicate peripheral cyanosis due to chronic bronchitis.

  6. Ankle swelling?

    Why: may suggest right heart failure as a complication of severe chronic bronchitis.
