Diagnostic Test list for Buttock pain:

The list of diagnostic tests mentioned in various sources as used in the diagnosis of Buttock pain includes:

  • Physical examination
    • Point exactly to the area of greatest discomfort
    • Observe walking and gait
    • Feel lumbosacral, hip and sacroiliac joints for tenderness
    • Observe range of movement of lumbosacral spine and hip joint
    • Test the sacroiliac joint
    • Examine for signs of peripheral arterial insufficiency e.g. absent peripheral pulses including femoral pulse, cool foot, loss of hair over the lower leg
    • Digital rectal examination - note any pain, lumps, swellings on examination (anal and rectal conditions may refer pain to buttocks); move the coccyx during examination to elicit pain in Coccygodynia.
  • Blood tests
  • Ankle-brachial index - compares the resting systolic blood pressure at the arm and ankle and can indicate occlusive peripheral vascular disease.
  • Radiological investigations
    • X-ray of Lumbosacral spine and Hip can detect arthritis, fractures
    • CT Scan or MRI of Lumbosacral spine may be required to demonstrate narrowing of the spinal canal and compression of nerve roots causing sciatica
    • Bone Scan may be required to detect fractures and tumors that are not detected on X-Ray
    • Ultrasound scan of hip may assist in diagnosing Trochanteric bursitis
    • Arteriography can detect the site and degree of arterial obstruction if suspect gluteal claudication due to peripheral vascular disease
