The list of diagnostic tests mentioned in various sources as used in the diagnosis of Cracked lips includes:

  • Physical examination
    • Inspect for signs of dehydration - e.g. dry cracked lips, dry mouth and reduced.
    • Saliva
    • Examine for any sores on lips that may caused cracked lips - e.g. herpes simplex.
    • Full physical examination - may reveal features of systemic disease e.g. Diabetes mellitus, Kawasaki disease, HIV infection.
  • Blood tests
    • Full blood count
    • Electrolytes - may demonstrate changes due to dehydration.
    • Serum iron, Vitamin B12, folate - to determine nutritional deficiency.
    • Blood glucose
    • Thyroid function tests
    • Serum zinc
    • Erythrocyte glutathione reductase activity ( Vitamin B2 status) - not widely available.
    • Erythrocyte aminotransferase activity (Vitamin B6 status) - not widely available.
    • HIV serology - if appropriate.
