DIAGNOSIS CHECKLIST
for Dark circles under eyes

Questions Your Doctor May Ask - and Why!

During a consultation, your doctor will use various techniques in his assesment of the symptom: Dark circles under eyes. These may include a physical examination or other medical tests. Your doctor may ask several questions when assessing your condition. It is important to remember that your consultation is a two-way process and any extra information you can share with your doctor may help them with their diagnosis.

Some of the questions your doctor may ask are listed below:

  1. How long have you had dark circles under the eyes?

Why: to determine if acute or chronic.

  2. Is it unilateral or bilateral?

Why: if unilateral may be bruising around the eye.

  3. Known allergies?

Why: e.g. seasonal allergies such as pollens from trees and grasses (hay fever); year round allergies such as moulds, house dust mites, animal hair and dander, bird feathers, foods - may all produce "allergic shiners".

  4. Has there been any trauma to the eye area?

Why: may suggest bruising as cause of dark circles under eyes.

  5. Fluid intake and fluid loss?

Why: dehydration may contribute to dark circles under the eyes.

  6. Past Medical history?

Why: e.g. allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, eczema, asthma.

  7. Family history?

Why: e.g. family history of allergic tendencies such as allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, asthma and eczema may suggest increased likelihood of allergic shiners as cause of dark circles under eyes; dark circles under the eyes may also run in the family possibly due to an inherited eye blood vessel condition.

Questions your doctor may ask about related symptoms:

Sometimes, other symptoms may be present and may help your doctor analyse your condition. These may include:

  1. Symptoms of allergic rhinitis?

Why: e.g. sneezing, itchy nose, copious thin watery nasal discharge, sometimes nasal obstruction, reduced sense of smell, dry and sore throat, itchy throat, dark rings under the eyes known as "allergic shiners".

  2. Symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis?

Why: e.g. itchy eyes, frequent rubbing of eyes which aggravate the problem and can cause dark circles under eyes, red eyes, clear usually watery eye discharge and swelling of the eyelids.

  3. Sleep difficulties?

Why: e.g. insomnia, sleep apnea, shift workers - lack of sleep or poor sleep quality may aggravate dark circles under eyes.
