The list of diagnostic tests mentioned in various sources as used in the diagnosis of Encephalitis includes:

  • Physical investigations
    • Temperature
    • Neck stiffness
    • Nervous system examination for focal abnormalities that may occur depending on the part of the nervous system involved by the inflammatory process
  • Blood tests
    • Full blood count and ESR
    • Viral serology - e.g. mumps.
  • Spinal tap - may identify the virus or bacteria e.g. echovirus, coxsackie, mumps, herpes simplex, adenovirus, varicella zoster, influenza, measles.
  • Throat swab for culture may identify the organism
  • Stool culture
  • Radiological investigations
    • CT or MRI Brain - may visualize swelling of brain or associated abscess with bacterial infection.
    • EEG - may show characteristic features in encephalitis.
  • Lumbar puncture (spinal tap)
  • Blood tests
